The Castro Valley Project

This Castro Valley home had a plain front yard: a strip of lawn, a bare driveway edge and nothing to draw the eye to the house. The homeowners wanted more curb appeal, a yard that looked finished from the street, and lighting that made the house feel welcoming and safe at night.

Designing it first

We built a 3D design so the homeowners could see the new layout in daylight and at night before any work started. The design laid out new planting beds along the house and property line, accent trees, a walkway to the porch, and where each light would go.

What we built

We replaced the lawn with synthetic turf and reshaped the front yard with layered planting beds, accent trees and Lodi rock groundcover, all on new irrigation. A 2x2 stepping-stone walkway runs along the side of the turf, and clean edging finishes the beds. Low-voltage LED landscape lighting uplights the trees, washes the front of the house and lights the walkway and porch.

The result

The house now stands out on the street during the day, and at night the lighting gives it a warm, finished look. The porch has become a place the homeowners actually sit, and the turf means no more mowing.
