The San Ramon Project
This San Ramon home had a front and side yard that were hard to use and didn't make much of a first impression: tired groundcover, a narrow side yard with no clear path, and a walk to the front door that felt like an afterthought. The goal was a low-water landscape that looked good all year and made it easy to get around the house.
Designing it first
We started with a 2D plan that mapped out the walkway, a flagstone dry creek bed, boulders, trees, planting areas and lighting, then turned it into a 3D design so the homeowners could walk through the yard on screen, day and night, before construction.
What we built
A curved concrete walkway with flagstone ribbons now leads to the front door, lined with drought-tolerant planting, moss rock boulders and Lodi rock groundcover. We added a flagstone patio and raised wooden planters, refreshed the beds with mulch, and turned the side yard into a usable passage with flagstone stepping stones set in pebbles and wood steps up to the house. Everything is watered by a high-quality drip irrigation system, and low-voltage lighting uplights the main tree and lights the walkway, steps and side path at night.
The result
The front of the house now has a clear, welcoming entry, the side yard is a path instead of a leftover space, and the low-water planting keeps maintenance and water use down. At night the lighting makes the whole route from the driveway to the back safe and easy to walk.
