The Pleasanton Project

This Pleasanton backyard wasn't getting much use: dry, patchy grass, an aging deck with stairs down to the yard, and nothing to pull anyone outside. The homeowners wanted a complete outdoor living space for relaxing in the evenings and entertaining friends.

Designing it first

Our plan laid out a new deck, curved pathways, garden beds with boulders, a seating area and LED path lighting. The 3D design then showed the family the finished yard in daylight and at night, with the fire pit lit and the lights on, so every decision was made before construction started.

What we built

We rebuilt the deck and stairs in redwood to connect the house to the yard, added a covered pergola seating area, and built a stamped concrete patio with a propane fire pit lounge surrounded by a round rock border. Synthetic turf replaced the dry lawn, curved pathways tie each area together, and new garden beds with flowering shrubs soften the fence line. Landscape lighting runs along the paths, under the pergola and through the plantings.

The result

This yard really comes alive after dark. With the fire pit going and the lighting on, it works like an outdoor living room, and the turf means no more mowing or watering a struggling lawn. It's a good example of how planning the lighting from the start changes how much a yard gets used.
